Come With Me was made in 2007, while I was living in the foreigner’s ghetto of Itaewon-dong in Seoul, South Korea. I was also head over heels in love.
Up until then, I’d been perfectly content imagining a future made up of massive lofts with trampolines and video arcade games — very much in the spirit of the 1988 Tom Hanks cinematic masterpiece, Big. But something shifted. Suddenly, I didn’t just want spectacle and freedom — I wanted to start a family, settle into a smaller place, and head out on an even bigger adventure.
Is it strange to introduce a chill, sexy tune by talking about small-town living and raising a family? Maybe. But that’s where this track comes from.
The whispered invitation — “come with me” — has taken on different meanings at different points in my life since I made this track. So has the climactic exclamation of restrained joy that follows. What felt like seduction at one moment later felt like commitment, partnership, and trust.
I regret that we never filmed the concept we talked about — wandering the maze-like paths throughout our neighbourhood in Itaewon, letting the city itself play a role in the story. But when I close my eyes and listen now, I’m instantly back there.
Close your eyes.
Come with me — to wherever your mind chooses.
Enjoy the trip. It’s always better when you come with me.
