All Over The Space 009 part 3 ⋆ accomplicated

description: The third part of the 9th All Over The Space was on theme was tonnes of classic dance tracks both original and remixes, as well as throwbacks from when I used to party at Sona in Montreal every Friday and Saturday night in the late 90s.

This mix starts with the tail end of a track by Nicolas Jaar, one of my all-time favourite producers, followed by Jazzsteppa’s Big Swing Sound, a tune that I would routinely play back when I was DJing in Seoul and my main focus was on #Dubstep; this was, I believe, back before Dubstep was a dirty word. The very next track is Propellerhead’s History Repeating featuring the great Shirley Bassey. This was a record that I picked up in ’97 and sits on my record shelf to this day.

What I’m getting at, is that this mix could be considered somewhat of an accomplice historical dance party. Half way through the mix is Blue Boy’s Remember Me. This Garage House tune was absolutely massive in ’97 back when I would frequent Sona every Friday and Saturday night in the late 90s. Sona, the benchmark by which I measure every party, is a legendary now defunct after-hours venue owned by @tiga, that checked every box; every box. At the time it felt like every DJ had a favourite version of that single. I personally enjoy mixing it with St. Germain’s Rose Rouge which uses some of the same vocal sample.

Near the end of the mix is a nod towards the lovely @jacqui_carol whose day of birth we were celebrating that evening, and the one who chose the speakeasy theme, Derrick Carter’s remix of DJ Q’s Glasgow’s Jazz. A few tracks prior to that one was Jack Da Groove’s Jacking Feet that samples Paul Whiteman’s Happy Feet from 1930. Happy Feet was the backing track on a video that Jaqui shared when we first started throwing around ideas about the 9th All Over The Space.

The second last tune in this mix is Renaissance Man’s remix of #AphexTwin’s Windowlicker. Perhaps @lowerfrequency or @allyaphex could better comment, but I truly feel like Richard D. James is where in the Venn diagram my Detroit crew’s musical tastes all overlap.

And finally the end, Dance With Me by Kevin de Vries, the melodic techno track that gave me an opportunity to share the dance floor with @rbcabldn.
