Fuck your censorship

Censoring lyrics in music doesn’t have the intended effect of the censor. If anything, it brings the “offensive” word to the forefront and puts it into the listeners head. If I, for example, say “the F word”, not the actual word, but literally “the F word”, it is an attempt to cleverly skirt around being guilty of using the word while still using it. News flash, it is still being used, and if anything, now I’ve put the actual intended word in the listeners’ heads as something that stands out, rather than just saying the word and letting it equally wash over the ears of those who are in earshot. Censoring words gives those words more power. Not censoring these arbitrarily offensive words positions them as equal to all other words – they are neither more or less powerful, they just are.

The “clean version” might as well be an instrumental

Once while a child who was not mine was in my car, my then 6 year old son asked me to play a Giggs tune. Because there was a child who was not my own present, I played the “clean” version. The instrumental would have sounded better. Halfway through the tune, my son asked me what was wrong with the track. I then went on to explain that this was the “clean” version, and therefore didn’t have any swear words in it. It was at this point that I realized that listening to the “dirty” version wasn’t more offensive; the words said were just words. The “offensive” words were equally weighed to all of the other words and therefore did not stand out. Removing them highlighted how many “offensive” words there were and the song sounded ridiculous as a result.

Only swear when it is appropriate; if that’s the lyric, it’s appropriate

Now this isn’t to say that swear words and their equivalent should be used in “polite conversation” (I definitely do not suggest doing that). Nor should they be used to punctuate every sentence (i.e. as my football teammates would do). They should be used sparingly so as to maximize their effectiveness. If you know me well, you would know that I do not swear often, but I will when it is appropriate to do so… and when I’m singing along to a song because, those are the lyrics.

Censorship didn’t result in me listening to less explicit lyrics

What I can tell you is this. In 1986 when I was at A&A Records and Tapes with my mom, standing at the counter with RUN DMC’s Raising Hell in my hand, and the clerk told my mom, “You know that this has offensive words in it.” It didn’t make me want to listen to the tape less. The only thing that resulted from my dad snapping Onyx’s Bacdafucup in two was that I had to buy another copy. In 1989 at the pre-teen dance when the DJ bleeped out Maestro Fresh Wes during Drop The Needle, the whole crowd yelled, “Now fuck it”. 2 Live Crew’s As Nasty As They Wanna Be may have been deemed offensive by the courts, but I still had a copy in my tape deck in my little suburban town, and surprising to none, As Clean As They Wanna Be had notably worse sales than the explicit version.

If the tune slaps, I’ll play it

Why am I going on and on about this? If it wasn’t already clear, I’ll be frank, I don’t shy away from playing tracks that contain lyrics that have for whatever reason been deemed offensive. WAP by Carbi B and Megan Thee Stallion slaps. It is a straight up dope booty tune; period. Are you offended conservatives? Get off my feed and don’t listen to my mixes. Women celebrating and taking charge of their own bodies is straight up sexy and should never be censored. I personally welcome any and all opportunities to throw down proper booty tunes for listeners to shake their collective booties. If you find any of this to be at all offensive as you clutch your precious pearls close to your chest, let me be clear, your priorities are different than mine and moralizing about words that others say does not make you a moral person.
