Description:

An all request soundtrack, courtesy of the students of Great Moose Adventures.

What happens when you ask an entire school, from kindergarten to Grade 8, to choose the music for their Terry Fox Run?

You get everything from Dolly Parton to KPop Demon Hunters, AC/DC to Taylor Swift, Lynyrd Skynyrd to C418, with a little Shaggy, Michael Jackson, and Snap! thrown in for good measure.

And I got to mix it all together.

In the days leading up to the run, students led a hype squad from classroom to classroom at Great Moose Adventures, asking each class to submit five songs they wanted to hear. With fewer than 100 students in the school, everyone had an opportunity to contribute to the soundtrack.

The requests came back handwritten, sometimes barely legible, and almost exclusively with song titles rather than artists. There was a bit of detective work involved in figuring out exactly what everyone wanted to hear, but I made it my mission to play every request I could identify.

And that’s exactly what I did.

The mix opens with C418’s “Minecraft” as the students warmed up, before launching into a musical journey that makes absolutely no attempt to respect genre boundaries. We go from Queen to Zara Larsson, from Survivor to KPop Demon Hunters, from Dolly Parton to Chappell Roan.

By the time we get to the final stretch, we’re bouncing between the Spice Girls, Jennifer Lopez, Shaggy, Pitbull, Arrow, and Snap!, before returning to C418’s “Danny” as everyone cooled down.

It’s all over the place. And I love it.

I’ve been DJing since 1997, and one of the things I’ve always loved most about music is discovering how seemingly unrelated pieces fit together. Give me a collection of songs that have no business being played next to one another, and I’ll happily spend my time figuring out how to make them work.

But what makes this particular mix special isn’t the mixing. It’s where the music came from.

These weren’t songs I selected because I thought they’d appeal to a group of kids. They were songs the students chose themselves. Some are decades older than the students who requested them. Others are so new that I might never have encountered them otherwise.

And for the duration of the run, everyone got to hear a little bit of what everyone else loves.

This is a live recording of the entire event, exactly as it happened. No reconstructed playlist, no studio do-over. Just me, the students’ requests, and a school full of kids running for Terry Fox.

A huge thank you to everyone at Great Moose Adventures for inviting me to be part of the day, to Rowan and the hype squad for collecting all those requests, and especially to the students for putting together one of the most wonderfully unpredictable tracklists I’ve had the pleasure of playing.

I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed playing it.
